5.5mIC 1994-1995 (4th fournée)

As these (poor-quality, sorry) pictures of the cockpit show, cockpit ergonomics and handling were the main focus of this project.

The cockpit itself was treated like a bathtub, hung from the deck then laminated together in one shot so it was completely watertight (a solution we're still using).

Hardware was doubled on each side as on a cat, and grouped on small islands located in between the crew, so that each had access to them to help out easily and quickly on any manoeuvre. It was also easy to ease the sheets quickly in case of trouble during a leg.

A spinnaker chute was tested on SUI-190, which though very efficient from a handling point of view was too destructive for these fragile sails.

One unit, SUI-190 White Spirit, was built for Philippe Durr (deck and cockpit by Christof Wilke); then Lumba Go for Olivier Besse; Chlika Chlika for Alain Cloux; and NED-33 Onvermijdelijk for Jan Van Gelderen.

Meanwhile, a light-air version was built by Josi Steinmayer exclusively for Bruno Marazzi. This boat, SUI-193 Ali-Baba (then ? to J. & E. Saurer), was distinguishable for its very low area fin-keel which was fitted with a trim tab with long flexible fairing strips that worked in combination with the two foils to achieve the effect of an efficient asymmetrical section. This principle is still used on our latest designs as there continue to be no limits on this within the rules.
