Class 40' : birth of a clever rating rule

Rarely have we seen such enthusiasm for a new class: almost 28 boats registered for the Route du Rhum 2006, and other projects are still emerging.

Endowed with a power ratio equivalent to that of an Open 60, the Class 40 boasts about twice the righting moment of a lake racer such as the Psaros 40' (8.2 t.m to 4.2 t.m) – for the same hull length and mast height!

The success of this project stems without doubt from the ‘everyone welcome’ spirit inherited from the Mini 6.50m, plus strict control of the costs.

Our office jumped into this new competition under instructions from an English skipper who wanted a version tailormade for shorthanded offshore competition. The hull shape already takes advantage of the last iterations. Deck layout and sail plan are optimised and effective for better performances. The interior is spartan but we took great care over ergonomics. Our client is very tall, so the specs correspond to his needs but with everything still adjustable.
